Our Story

About Mindful Life Community

Founded in 2018, Mindful Life Community is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to making evidence-based mindfulness education accessible to all members of the western North Carolina community and beyond.

Our Mission

Mindful Life Community exists to reduce suffering and enhance well-being by providing accessible, evidence-based mindfulness education, meditation instruction, and holistic wellness programming to individuals, families, and organizations regardless of income, background, or prior experience. We believe that the capacity for present-moment awareness, compassionate self-regulation, and intentional living is a fundamental human birthright, not a luxury reserved for the privileged few.

Our programs are grounded in the established clinical protocols of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), and trauma-sensitive contemplative practice. Every curriculum we offer has been adapted from interventions with robust peer-reviewed evidence published in leading scientific journals. We maintain rigorous standards of instructor certification, participant outcome tracking, and organizational transparency that distinguish us as a trusted partner for healthcare providers, educational institutions, and corporate wellness programs throughout the region.

Founding Story

Mindful Life Community was founded by Dr. Eleanor Whitfield, a licensed clinical psychologist and certified MBSR instructor, after witnessing firsthand the transformative impact of mindfulness-based interventions during her fifteen years of clinical practice at Mission Hospital's integrative medicine department in Asheville. Dr. Whitfield observed that while evidence for mindfulness-based approaches continued to accumulate in peer-reviewed literature, access to high-quality, affordable mindfulness instruction remained severely limited for many community members who could benefit most.

In 2018, with seed funding from the Blue Ridge Health Foundation and the enthusiastic support of local healthcare partners, Dr. Whitfield established Mindful Life Community as a 501(c)(3) non-profit with a sliding-scale tuition model designed to ensure that financial circumstances would never prevent a community member from accessing our programming. Since our founding, we have served over 3,200 participants across more than 160 program cohorts, maintained a 94% participant-reported stress reduction rate, and built a teaching faculty of twelve certified instructors representing diverse contemplative traditions and clinical specializations.
